Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in the semifinals of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Arthur Zwane reveals that he warned against the aerial prowess of Sandile Mthethwa.
The lanky defender was a substitute and scored the winning goal deep into extra time. Striker Kermit Erasmus scored a tap in to give Pirates the lead in the first half.
Yusuf Maart equalized in the second half, before Mthethwa won the match in extra time.
“We did not push enough, we did not challenge, and I remember telling them that, ‘listen they’ve got Sandile [Mthethwa] whose got height.’” 10111 told SuperSport TV.
“‘The only thing they’re going to do from dead ball situations [is that] they’re going to target the far post. Let’s make sure we have numbers on the far post. One should go with him, if it’s not Siya [Siyabonga Ngezana], it should be Sifiso.’
“Unfortunately, we looked like we were set and ready. But also, because we didn’t put pressure on ball, they managed to pinpoint and that’s how we gave it away.
“Look, I can’t blame the players. They gave their all, they tried their level best. It wasn’t to be.
“This has been the story of our season. You look at the effort that we out in, the only thing that was missing was for us to take our chances and we must have seen it today.
“We kept on working on it, you know, to improve on that aspect. Look, it let us down big time. We also conceded goals that we shouldn’t have.
“But its one of those things, and congrats to Orlando Pirates.” He concluded.
