Bafana Bafana’s Unbeaten Streak Faces New Test Ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Bafana Bafana’s remarkable unbeaten run could soon face its toughest challenge yet. Hugo Broos’ men have not lost a game in regulation time since January 2024, when they fell 2-0 to Mali in their opening group match of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Since then, the team has built one of the longest unbeaten streaks in international football, ranking third globally behind Spain and Senegal.

The run has helped South Africa qualify for both the 2025 AFCON and the 2026 FIFA World Cup without suffering a defeat on the pitch. However, their record carries one blemish. Bafana forfeited a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho by a 3-0 scoreline for fielding an ineligible player, despite winning the match 3-0 on the field.

Reports had suggested that Brazil were considering South Africa for a friendly in November, but Senegal now look more likely to face the five-time world champions. That leaves the South African Football Association (SAFA) searching for strong opponents to test Broos’ side during next month’s international window.

With the AFCON kicking off on December 21, it would be logical for Bafana to face high-caliber opposition. Matches against North African or European teams could provide valuable experience, especially as Egypt, a North African powerhouse, will share their AFCON group with South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Angola.

On the African continent, several potential opponents are unavailable. Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Cameroon are all committed to the African World Cup play-offs. That limits the options but also opens a chance to schedule games against teams with contrasting styles, perhaps from Europe or Asia.

Senegal currently hold the longest unbeaten run at 29 games, while Spain are second with 24. Both teams last suffered defeats in international friendlies. Bafana’s streak, though shorter, is significant considering the quality of their recent opponents and the progress made under Broos.

Maintaining this momentum will be critical as South Africa aims to re-establish itself among Africa’s elite. Facing stronger international opposition could help sharpen the team’s edge ahead of AFCON and ensure that their impressive record is more than just a statistic.

If SAFA secures the right friendlies, Bafana could enter the continental showpiece battle-tested and ready to prove that their unbeaten run is no fluke.
