Former Goalkeeper On What Khune Should Do To Get Game Time

The seasoned goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune has been advised to leave Kaizer Chiefs if he wants to get game time. Khune only played one game last season across all competitions which is the worst record since he started playing for Amakhosi in 2007.

Former Bush Bucks goalie Nigel Dixon believes that the availability of Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Peterson will make it hard for Khune to get back to the field of play. “I think Khune has to be realistic and honest with himself now,” retired goalkeeper Nigel Dixon tells KickOff.com.

“The fact that he only played once last season despite not being injured says a lot. Does he still want to play? If he wants to play, then he knows he is not going to get that game-time opportunity at Chiefs because they have Brandon Petersen and Bruce Bvuma.

“If he wants game time then he should move to a smaller team. If he doesn’t want game time then he must find another position at the club, maybe goalkeeper coaching. I can understand how frustrating this can be for all parties involved because he is sitting there earning this massive salary but not contributing playing-wise.

“Yes, he could be contributing with advice, encouragement and motivation but is it worth what they are paying him. Playing wise it is no longer worth it for the club. He is now being kept based on sentiments rather than playing merit.

“Khune is not the same anymore and he needs to tackle this issue himself by being honest because this is an individual decision,” says Dixon. I know it is difficult to step out because he has been a brilliant goalkeeper but there comes a time when you must move on like the rest of the best in the world.

“Khune should rather retire while at the top so that he continues being remembered for the good rather than to mess up the good that you did. He must know that the nature of human beings is that they want to always remember the bad more than the good.

“He has done enough good to be remembered that way instead of then slanting into being a once good but then ended up bad kind of thing,” says Dixon.
