Benni McCarthy, the former Orlando Pirates player tells it all, from being a gangster in the ghetto to becoming Bafana Bafana best goal scorer is not a bad story to tell. The only South African to win the UEFA Champions League at the age of 37, looks back at how far he has come in life and how proud he is of all his accomplishments.
“It gives me great satisfaction to have gone from the gangster life to being the nation’s all time scorer” he said.
“I am the first South African to score in the World Cup finals, to win the Champion League, its truly not a bad story to tell to my grand kids one day” he added.
He made his international debut in 1997 and rose to stardom at the AFCON a year later. McCarthy is still South Afrcia’s leading all-time record scorer with 32 strikes in 80 games.
