Brayan León Embraces Early Impact at Mamelodi Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns new signing Brayan León has made a strong early statement in South African football. The Colombian forward has already sampled both the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League and his response has been positive. Sundowns remained top of Group C in the CAF Champions League after a 2-2 draw with Al Hilal on Friday night at Loftus Versfeld. The result kept the Brazilians unbeaten in the group stages but they will feel they missed a chance to secure maximum points at home. Goals from León and Teboho Mokoena were cancelled out by a determined Sudanese side.

The match marked only León’s second appearance for Sundowns and his first in continental competition for the club. Signed earlier in January for a reported R53 million, the 24-year-old arrived with heavy expectations. He has responded quickly and decisively. León announced himself in the Betway Premiership last week when he scored on debut against Orbit College. That goal helped him settle and build confidence. He followed it up with another strike against Al Hilal, showing composure and sharp movement in the box.

Speaking to the club’s media after the match, León expressed satisfaction with his adaptation. He highlighted the importance of starting well, scoring goals and avoiding defeat in his opening games. He also shared his first impressions of local football, describing the South African game as technical and physically demanding. For León, goals remain the key measure of success. He stressed that scoring is the striker’s main task and believes his early returns are only the beginning of a longer journey with the club.

Sundowns now shift focus back to league action. They travel to face Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday. Sekhukhune recently held Orlando Pirates to a goalless draw, which sets up another competitive fixture. León’s fast start suggests a player growing in confidence and understanding. If this momentum continues, Sundowns may have secured a forward capable of making a decisive impact both domestically and in Africa.
