Broos Closes Debate On Lorch After Bafana’s AFCON Win

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has firmly ended speculation surrounding Thembinkosi Lorch following South Africa’s 2-1 victory over Angola in their Africa Cup of Nations opener. The coach made it clear that his decision regarding the Morocco-based attacker is final.
The win over Angola on Monday evening gave South Africa a positive start in the tournament, but post-match discussions quickly turned to Lorch, who currently plays for Wydad Athletic. Questions about his continued exclusion threatened to distract from Bafana’s performance on the pitch.
Broos, however, insisted that squad selection remains entirely his responsibility. He noted that with a large pool of players to choose from, tough decisions are necessary.
“Yes, there are supporters [of Lorch]. First instance, this is a choice. I think I have 45 players or something like that, where I can choose. So you have to make choices. That is one,” Broos said after the match.
He elaborated that his decision is based on long-term observation rather than recent form, pointing to Lorch’s history at previous clubs. “Secondly, everybody is talking about Lorch. I didn’t hear or see him in the last three years. He was playing in Pirates, they kicked him out. He was playing in Sundowns, they kicked him out. He was playing in Wydad Casablanca, I think. He didn’t play anymore. And now suddenly he plays well.”
Broos concluded by reaffirming his authority over team selection. “I made my choice and that’s it. I can maybe give you some other names, maybe this one or that one or another one. You know, when I make my choices, I make my choices on my own. And that’s it.”
The remarks put an end to ongoing debates about Lorch’s absence and reinforce Broos’ approach of selecting players based on his long-term assessment rather than short-term performances. Bafana Bafana will now focus fully on their next AFCON fixture against Egypt.
