CAF Appoints Pierre Ghislain Atcho for Bafana Bafana vs Super Eagles World Cup Qualifier

The World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Nigeria in Bloemfontein on Tuesday evening will draw attention not only for the teams but also for the referee in charge. CAF has appointed Gabonese official Pierre Ghislain Atcho to oversee the fixture.
Atcho comes with extensive experience at continental and international levels. He has officiated in the CAF Champions League, Confederation Cup, Super Cup, and African Football League. He has also been a referee at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Despite his experience, Atcho’s record has some controversy. During the last AFCON, he refereed the Last 16 match between Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal. His decisions sparked criticism, as he failed to send off Sadio Mane for a dangerous tackle and overlooked valid penalty claims for both sides. CAF subsequently removed him from the tournament.
This history makes his role in the Bafana Bafana versus Nigeria match a key talking point. Nigeria needs a win to keep its World Cup qualification hopes alive. Any other result will eliminate them with two games remaining. The match also carries potential complications for South Africa, as they face scrutiny over the use of ineligible player Teboho Mokoena earlier in the group stage.
Atcho has previously officiated Bafana Bafana matches, including a 2-2 draw against Uganda in last year’s AFCON qualifiers at Orlando Stadium. Several Mamelodi Sundowns players in the squad will be familiar with him, as he has refereed their CAF Champions League games over the past two seasons.
His recent assignments include the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup final in May, where RS Berkane defeated Simba 2-0, and the 2023 CHAN final.
Assisting Atcho on the lines will be fellow Gabonese officials Boris Marlaise Ditsoga and Amos Abeigne Ndong. Their combined experience is expected to ensure a smooth officiating performance, although Atcho’s controversial past will likely keep eyes on every decision throughout the match.
This qualifier is set to be intense, with both teams aware of the stakes. Atcho’s performance could influence the outcome and set the tone for the remainder of the group stage.
