Coach Hugo Broos’ methods have done enough to see results on and off the pitch. He has been able to win over doubters in South Africa.
Broos’ directness and honesty has exposed several issues in the South African football landscape. He has shown South Africans what has been the problem in the country’s downfall.
South Africa has experienced two extremes since Bafana Bafana was formed in the early 1990’s. The country saw some great highs.
This started with winning the 1996 AFCON, hosted in the country. Qualification to the 1998 FIFA World Cup followed.
The 2002 FIFA World Cup also beckoned for the South Africans. The country has failed to qualify for a FIFA World Cup ever since.
In his short spell, Broos has called out SAFA, the PSL, footballers, football agents and the football culture in the country. His criticisms do not come as a single force.
He has also been able to garner results. The country currently sits top of their qualifying group.
“But we had a clean sheet and that’s very important because before the game starts we already have one point.” Broos said after defeating Ethiopia last night.
“And maybe if you can score, you win the game like we did today. We can keep a clean sheet and that’s a very good quality.
“In Ethiopia, we could count on Ronwen (Williams), he had two fantastic saves, otherwise we were not in the match anymore at that moment, but he did it.
“Today the defence was good and there were not so many chances. Our defence was very strong.” He added.
