CONFIRMED! Early Release For Maluleka From Sundowns

The agent of George Maluleka has confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns won’t exercise an option to extend the player’s contract.

Maluleka joined Sundowns from Kaizer Chiefs as a free agent in 2020 and signed a two-year contract plus an option of one year which Sundowns didn’t activate.

Maluleka’s representative Sean Roberts confirmed the news to Idiski Times today after rumours emerged on Wednesday.

“Sundowns didn’t take up the option, we’re a little bit surprised but George being the professional that he is… he’s super grateful for all the opportunities he’s had and the trophies he’s won at Sundowns,” he told Idiski Times.

“Obviously, teammates become family so it will be difficult to move away but we are all looking forward to his next move and future in football.”

The decision came as a shock to many considering that Maluleka was starting to play at Masandawana towards the end of the season. Earlier last month, Roberts had reported that The Brazilians had until the end of May to make the decision.

“Sundowns have been given until the end of May to take up his option. There is no concern as Sundowns have every right to let us know the last day of May. There’s no concern regarding George. He is an out-an-out professional. Every single time at training, he will be there keeping fit and preparing for what’s to come. Whatever that may be, he will be prepared because that’s George Maluleka for you,” he told Soccer Laduma.

The 33-year-old only had 19 appearances in the yellow jersey and now as a free agent, he’ll be seeking where to begin the next chapter.

Maluleka was keen to stay

It looked like “Mido” as he’s affectionately known was keen to stay with the treble winners as he once said, “I’m fine where I am”.

“The plus one (in the contract) is there. I’m still a Mamelodi Sundowns player, so yeah, the plus one is there,” Maluleka said as per Soccer Laduma.

“I’m fine where I am. I’ve been there for two seasons now and it’s been good. I’ve been happy at Sundowns. Like I said, it’s a two plus one (contract), so it’s in their hands. I still have a lot to offer. As long as I wake up and have a purpose, then it means I can still push. I am not one to force. When it’s the end, then I will call it. But I still feel strong and still have a lot to offer.”
