Yesterday President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that football fans can finally return to stadia across the country. SAFA President Danny Jordaan was thrilled to hear this reality has finally happened.
The last time Bafana Bafana had any fans was when they hosted Zimbabwe in a FIFA World Cup qualifier at the FNB Stadium last year. Only 2000 supporters were allowed to watch the national team claim victory over their rivals.
The PSL had a taste of supporters when Mamelodi Sundowns played Cape Town City in the MTN 8 final at the Mbombela Stadium last year. However, this was not a catalyst to having more supporters at grounds.
Both AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns were allowed to have 2000 supporters in their most recent CAF Champions League matches.
But PSL matches will most likely have supporters when domestic football returns from international break.
“We are happy that the government has opened up the space for fans to go back to the stadiums and it is a position that we have always advocated for. We welcome that decision,’’ Jordaan said to the SAFA website.
“We have always said vendors have suffered enough due to Covid-19 pandemic and it is high time that they go back to their businesses and only source of income of selling wares at the stadiums.
‘’This is also welcome news to taxi drivers as they had been starved of this source of income of ferrying fans to and from the stadiums,’’ he added.
