Doctor Khumalo Backs Mbokazi Move to Chicago Fire and Highlights MLS Opportunities

South African football legend Doctor Khumalo has shared his full support for Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi following the 20-year-old’s transfer to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire. The move comes after Pirates’ 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants, a match that doubled as a club send-off for the rising star. Mbokazi, who made his professional debut in March, has quickly established himself as a key figure for both the Soweto giants and the national team.
Khumalo drew on his own experience playing in the United States to assess Mbokazi’s prospects. He recalled joining the MLS in 1996 alongside Shaun Bartlett and noted how the league has grown since then. According to Khumalo, the current MLS attracts top-level talent, providing a competitive environment for young players like Mbokazi to develop. He emphasized that the defender will face high-quality opposition, including some of the world’s best players, which will aid his growth.
The former Kaizer Chiefs star added that moving to Chicago Fire represents a valuable opportunity for Mbokazi. He described the transfer as a “blessing in disguise” and suggested that performing well in the MLS could serve as a stepping stone for a future move to Europe. Khumalo stressed that while some critics may underestimate the MLS, the league is competitive and demanding, offering players the chance to sharpen their skills and adapt to new styles of play.
Mbokazi is set to represent Bafana Bafana at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations before joining Chicago Fire in the United States. Despite missing his flight to the national team camp and arriving a day late, the young defender is expected to feature in South Africa’s friendly against Ghana at Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday. Khumalo believes that these international appearances, combined with his MLS experience, will help Mbokazi mature into a complete player.
The transfer marks a significant milestone for Mbokazi, who has progressed rapidly from his professional debut earlier this year to becoming a sought-after talent abroad. Khumalo’s endorsement highlights the potential benefits of the move, framing it as a strategic step in the defender’s career development. For both Mbokazi and Orlando Pirates, the transfer underscores the increasing global visibility of South African talent.
