Durban City Set for Long-Awaited Trophy Celebration After Legal Battle

Durban City will finally have their moment of glory after being denied the chance to lift the Motsepe Foundation Championship trophy immediately following their last game of the season. The KZN-based club secured the league title, along with promotion to the DStv Premiership, after amassing an impressive 58 points from 30 matches.

Their crowning moment was initially delayed due to ongoing legal issues that surfaced after the season finale against Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium on 18 May. The controversy stemmed from a complaint lodged by JDR Stars with the Premier Soccer League (PSL), challenging the eligibility of midfielder Saziso Magawana, who they alleged had been improperly registered following his transfer from Marumo Gallants.

This unexpected hurdle cast a shadow over Durban City’s celebrations, leaving players, management, and fans in limbo. Club chairman Farook Kadodia did not hide his frustration throughout the process, publicly voicing his disappointment with the situation.

However, the uncertainty has finally come to an end. The PSL has now confirmed that Durban City will officially be crowned champions of the 2024/25 Motsepe Foundation Championship on Tuesday, 10 June 2025.

In a statement released by the League, the PSL announced: “The Premier Soccer League (PSL), in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, will host the official trophy handover ceremony to crown Durban City Football Club as the 2024/25 champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship champions on Tuesday, 10 June 2025.”

The much-anticipated ceremony will be broadcast live on the SuperSport PSL Channel (202) from 17h00, allowing supporters across the country to witness their team’s triumph.

After a challenging season both on and off the field, Durban City can now look forward to celebrating their achievement in front of the nation and preparing for life in South Africa’s top-flight league.
