Emile Baron has received R2 million in donations from former club Lillestrøm in Norway. The club had learnt of his dire financial situation post retirement.
Baron last played for Bidvest Wits in 2013, when he suffered a career ending injury against Orlando Pirates. Post retirement, he has seen his life dwindle tremendously, to the point where he has been reportedly living in the street.
After the career ending injury, Baron claims to have never received any insurance from the PSL.
“I am aware they are raising money for me, and I want to thank them for what they are doing. But I am now talking to the organisers to see how I will get the money,” Baron spoke, as per Times Live.
“Yes, at the moment almost 1.1 million Kroner has been raised to help Emile Baron after Norwegian TV2 published a story about his difficult life in South Africa,” head of communications Morten Stokstad told added.
“The initiative came from our supporters, ‘Kanari-Fansen’, but the club has also been working with the supporters on it.
“It’s pretty amazing. Of course, many of the contributors are fans of Lillestrøm, but many people from other clubs have also contributed.”
The former goalkeeper represented Lillestrøm between 1999 and 2004, when he left to join Kaizer Chiefs. He also played for SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits in the PSL.
