Orlando Pirates beat Swallows FC 1-0 in the DSTV Premiership this past weekend. Co-coach Fadlu Davids claims that their research on their opponents paid off in the end.
Davids revealed that they had done extensive research on the Dube Birds. Their docile of information helped them to victory. Striker Tshegofatso Mabasa came on in the second half to score a late header for the hosts.
“In every match you play you have that pressure as a coach. We knew we needed the three points, but more importantly we needed the performance,” he told the media after the win.
“It’s a process in terms of the point at which the squad is in. You lose a coach, and you have to stabilise, you have to look at what was good in the past and what the priorities are to fix and improve upon.
“Yes, the goal came late. But we knew Swallows have a trend where they bring on two wingers in the second half, and that opens up the game.
“It was just for us to wait for that moment to be able to impact our subs to be able to impact the game.”
This was Orlando Pirates’ first win of the 2021/2022 DSTV Premiership season. They also bowed out of the MTN 8 in the first round, to Saturday’s opponents.
They now lie third on the league table.
“I think in we’re really pleased with the match as a whole.
“To execute the game plan — we know Swallows are a really well-structured team in terms of how they defend and how they attack” the coach added.
“I think credit to the players to have been able to execute what we wanted. In defence, our high press and in attack as well, finding the spaces we identified.
“Unfortunately, not getting more goals. But overall, we’re very pleased.” He confirmed.
