Fawaaz Basadien Reflects on Mamelodi Sundowns Debut After MTN8 Rout of Richards Bay

Fawaaz Basadien has shared his thoughts on joining Mamelodi Sundowns and reflected in detail on his debut during the team’s dominant 4-0 victory over Richards Bay FC in the MTN8 quarterfinals.

The defending champions secured a convincing win at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday, with two goals from striker Iqraam Rayners, an own goal by Richards Bay’s Simphiwe Mcineka, and a late finish from Siyabonga Mabena sealing their place in the semi-finals. Basadien, who recently completed a high-value transfer to Sundowns, made his first appearance by coming off the bench during the match.

Speaking to the club’s media after the game, the 28-year-old midfielder described his debut as a significant milestone in his career. “It is an honour and a privilege to make my debut for such a prestigious club like Mamelodi Sundowns,” Basadien said. “I had been eagerly waiting for this moment, and once I stepped onto the field, my teammates were very welcoming. They encouraged me to get comfortable with the ball and integrate quickly. It felt like a dream debut, and I enjoyed every minute.”

Basadien acknowledged that, although he would have preferred more minutes on the pitch, he was satisfied with the opportunity to settle in and build chemistry with his new teammates. “Of course, I want to get more playing time as soon as possible. But for now, it is important just to get some touches on the ball, understand the team’s style, and develop good relationships with the players,” he explained.

Looking ahead, Basadien said his focus is on becoming a regular contributor and helping Sundowns achieve their goals. “My main objective is to play regularly and contribute to the team’s success. Whether it’s through assists, helping keep clean sheets, or simply supporting the squad, I want to help Sundowns win more trophies and reach their targets,” he added.

Basadien also took the time to thank the Sundowns supporters who attended the match. “I want to say a big thank you to all the fans who came out to support us today. Their presence was motivating, and I felt very welcomed since I arrived at the club. Playing in front of such passionate supporters is a joy and an honour,” he said.

With the MTN8 semi-finals secured, Basadien and Sundowns will now turn their attention to the upcoming Betway Premiership season. Their first league match is scheduled against Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, where Basadien will aim to build on his promising start.
