Fortune Makaringe Names Best Teammates and Toughest Opponents

Former Orlando Pirates midfielder Fortune Makaringe has shared his thoughts on the standout players he has played with and the most challenging opponents he has faced during his career.
Makaringe, who also had stints at Maritzburg United (now Durban City) and Cape Town City, recently became a free agent following the club’s relegation from the Betway Premiership last season. At 32, he has shifted focus toward his foundation work and influencer partnerships, including collaborations with brands such as Jaecoo.
With over 250 senior appearances, nearly 200 in the league, Makaringe reflected on his career during a conversation with footballer-turned-content creator Michael Morton. He praised several teammates for their quality and influence on the pitch. Among those he highlighted were Cape Town City stars Thulani Serero and Kamohelo Mokotjo, along with former Orlando Pirates teammate Thembinkosi Lorch, now at Wydad.
On the other hand, Makaringe named some of the toughest opponents he encountered. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Willard Katsande stood out for his physicality, with Makaringe noting that Katsande “used to kick him a lot.” He also mentioned Keagan Dolly, currently at Cape Town City and formerly at Chiefs, as one of the hardest players to face in match situations.
Makaringe’s reflections offer insight into the competitive nature of South African football and the respect players hold for their peers. His experiences underline both the skill and intensity required to succeed at the top level of the PSL.
As he navigates free agency, Makaringe’s career remains influential, with younger players looking to his journey for inspiration both on and off the field.
