Gayton McKenzie Backs Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s Record MLS Transfer
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, has publicly backed Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s high-profile move to Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire, dismissing concerns raised by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. The transfer, reportedly valued at $3 million (R51 million), has been described by McKenzie as historic for South African football, making Mbokazi the country’s highest-paid player in a transfer deal. Speaking at O.R. Tambo International Airport, McKenzie praised both the player and his agent, Basia Michaels, for negotiating a record-breaking agreement that sets a new benchmark in local football.
McKenzie rejected the notion that joining the MLS represents a step down in Mbokazi’s career. He highlighted the league’s rapid growth, increasing global recognition, and the added exposure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup being hosted in the United States. According to McKenzie, the move positions Mbokazi in a league gaining international attention, offering him the chance to showcase his talent on a bigger stage. The Minister also drew comparisons to South African football legend Benni McCarthy, noting that McCarthy’s career involved multiple transfers across Europe and South Africa before he cemented his legacy. McKenzie argued that Mbokazi’s career trajectory is similar, with the transfer reflecting his growing value and international appeal. He defended agent Basia Michaels, noting her achievement in negotiating one of the biggest deals in South African football history and outperforming other male agents in the process.
Describing Mbokazi as one of the greatest defenders he has witnessed, McKenzie said the move benefits all parties involved. He argued that European clubs willing to pay more would further increase Mbokazi’s value and reward the player, the agent, and South African football.
