George Maluleka Breaks Silence on Kaizer Chiefs Departure and Betrayal Claims

Former Kaizer Chiefs star George Maluleka has addressed accusations that he betrayed the club when he left for Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2019/20 season. The midfielder departed midway through the campaign while Chiefs were leading the league and chasing their first title in years.

Maluleka’s contract was entering its final months, and negotiations with Chiefs reportedly stalled. With no agreement reached, he signed for Sundowns and went on to help the club secure the league title on the final day. Many Chiefs fans have continued to view his move as a betrayal, but Maluleka has clarified the circumstances behind his decision.

Speaking on the Behind the Boot With SuperJourno podcast, Maluleka explained that multiple factors complicated the move. He mentioned health issues within the Chiefs management, including a minor operation for club CEO Bobby Motaung, and the impact of COVID-19 on the season. He also highlighted challenges involving his agent, which required his father’s involvement in finalising the deal.

Maluleka said Sundowns’ offer was timely and professional, but he stressed that leaving Chiefs was never a simple choice. He insisted he honoured his contract until the end and participated fully in training. He said the perception that he abandoned the team does not reflect the reality of the situation. “I went to training. I was honouring my contract. But, anyway, whatever happened, happened. We can’t change it now,” he said.

He further revealed that pre-contract talks with other clubs, including Sundowns, are standard practice in football, and that he did not sign anything prematurely. Maluleka emphasised that he continued negotiating with Chiefs throughout the period.

Reflecting on the public reaction, Maluleka admitted the experience has been emotionally challenging. He said encounters with fans wearing Chiefs merchandise often reminded him of the lingering anger over his departure. He acknowledged the criticism but said he had to move on and accept his choices.

Maluleka indicated he plans to explore writing a book or producing a documentary to fully explain the context of his exit. He hopes to provide clarity on the series of events that led to his move, aiming to correct misconceptions and share his perspective on a pivotal moment in his career.

Despite the controversy, Maluleka remains proud of his time at Chiefs and the effort he gave the club. His comments highlight the complexities behind player transfers and the pressures faced by professional footballers when making career decisions.
