Elias Mokwana Opens Up About Year-Long Bafana Bafana Setback Ahead of AFCON

Elias Mokwana has revealed that his hopes of representing Bafana Bafana nearly faded after a year without a national team call-up. The midfielder struggled for selection following his move abroad but has now returned to the squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Mokwana left South Africa 18 months ago, joining Tunisian giants Esperance before moving on loan to Saudi Pro League side Al Hazem in August. His time at Esperance proved challenging and contributed to his absence from national team selections over the past 12 months.
“I think I did lose some hope at some point,” Mokwana admitted when reflecting on the difficult period. He credited Esperance coach Jalel Kadri for keeping him motivated. “He gave me hope. He was working with me with extra sessions. He always believed in me and told me that I will get back into the team,” Mokwana said.
After leaving Sekhukhune United, Mokwana struggled to adapt initially at Esperance. “It wasn’t easy at first. Things didn’t go as I expected,” he explained. The move to Al Hazem, however, allowed him to regain confidence and improve his performance.
“I started to handle myself a little bit better. I was training well, and the coach was encouraging me every day and also believed in me. That is why I guess I’m starting to pick up my form again,” Mokwana added.
With the Africa Cup of Nations approaching, Mokwana’s return to the Bafana Bafana squad represents a personal and professional revival. His experience underscores the importance of resilience and guidance in overcoming career setbacks while competing at the highest level.
