Given Msimango Faces Uncertain Future at Kaizer Chiefs Amid Intense Defensive Competition

Kaizer Chiefs defender Given Msimango is heading into the 2025/26 season with question marks surrounding his future at the club, as concerns mount over limited game time and strong competition for a place in the starting line-up.

The 28-year-old centre-back, who joined Amakhosi from TS Galaxy in 2023, did not feature in the club’s pre-season tour of the Netherlands as he continues to recover from an injury setback. While his recovery is progressing, his place in the squad remains uncertain, with stiff competition in central defence threatening to sideline him further.

Kaizer Chiefs, under the leadership of new head coach Nasreddine Nabi, appear to be restructuring their defensive setup. The Tunisian tactician has shown a preference for the pairing of Mozambican international Inacio Miguel and promising youngster Rushwin Dortley, both of whom impressed during pre-season preparations. With Zitha Kwinika and Aden McCarthy also in the mix, Msimango’s path to consistent minutes looks increasingly narrow. Even when fit, the former TS Galaxy captain struggled to cement his place last season, managing just 10 appearances across all competitions.

Msimango signed a three-year contract with the Soweto giants in 2023, which is set to run until June 2026. However, club sources suggest that this upcoming season could be pivotal in determining whether the club retains him through the final year of his deal—or potentially explores alternatives at the end of the campaign. Despite still having two years left on his contract, a lack of consistent game time may put pressure on both the player and club to make decisions before June 2026. With no guarantees of a starting berth, the defender is expected to fight for his place and prove his value under Nabi’s new regime.

For Msimango, the 2025/26 campaign represents more than just a chance to get back on the pitch—it’s a crucial opportunity to stake his claim and secure his future with one of South Africa’s biggest clubs. With increased competition and tactical shifts under Nabi, he must seize every chance to impress, both in training and in matches. Whether he becomes a key contributor or finds himself further down the pecking order will depend largely on his form, fitness, and adaptability to the new coach’s system.

The pressure is on—and Msimango knows it.
