Group F 2022 FIFA World Cup Review: South Korea Make Last 16! The Asians managed to qualify through a last-minute effort.

Korea Republic defeated Portugal 2-1 to qualify into the last 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. They will face record holders Brazil in their next match.

South Korea 2:1 Portugal – Group F

Heading into this match, the Portuguese had already sealed their number 1 spot on the group. The Koreans on the other hand, had to win the match and hope that Uruguay doesn’t beat Ghana by 3+ goals.

Things didn’t go according to plan early on when Ricardo Horta scored within the first 5 minutes for the Europeans. This made things so much harder for South Korea.

However, they were able to equalise through Kim Younggwon in the first half. They needed one more goal, as results were in their favour in the other match.

Striker Hwang Heechan scored a stoppage time winner to seal victory and qualification for Korea Republic.

“We knew we had 90 minutes,” Son Heungmin told the FIFA Media.

“We kept going even after we conceded a goal early in the game and I think that is what helped us make a successful comeback. It was important that we scored an equaliser before half-time because it gave us hope that we still had a chance of winning.

“We all believed in a small miracle and played selflessly. I dedicate today’s win to my team-mates.

“I am very proud of them,” their captain added.
