Happy Birthday To The Late Mpho Gift Leremi! The extremely talented wide man would’ve turned 36 years old today.

Gift Leremi was only one month away from turning 23 years old in the summer of 2007 when he passed away. Leremi was a league winner with Orlando Pirates in 2003 as a teenager in his debut season in the PSL.

It is hard to imagine the career that Leremi would’ve had without feeling any sadness. Leremi was only 22 years old when he acquired a big move to then PSL Champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

He’d already spent 5 years in the PSL when he was 22 years old. That’s something that the division massively struggles with nowadays.

Players make debuts in their 20’s and are still considered youngsters even at 30 years old. When Leremi was 22, he was already a seasoned PSL and Bafana Bafana player.

When considering the careers that the likes of Teko Modise and Siphiwe Tshabalala have had, it is fair to say Leremi would’ve been in the same bracket if not higher.

Leremi passed away before big money was introduced into the PSL. He and his family missed out on the big contracts, big signing on fees and big endorsement deals that current PSL players are now enjoying.

It is a very fair argument that the current crop of PSL stars are not even as good as the players in the era of Gift Leremi.

One of the saddest things about Leremi’s tragic passing is that Mamelodi Sundowns didn’t recoup the investment they’d made. Leremi passed away weeks after joining The Brazilians.

The Mamelodi Sundowns faithful were also denied the opportunity to see the talented winger at his sizzling best.
