Here’s A List Of Coaches Who Have Coached The Same Club More Than Once! Stuart Baxter was announced as the new Kaizer Chiefs head coach yesterday.

Baxter will coach Amakhosi for the second time in his career. He is not the only head coach to return to his former club.

Teams re-hiring former head coaches is a popular feature of the DSTV Premiership. Should success fail to come from other sources, owners and chairmen seek comfort in past relationships.

These are often a hit or miss situation. They can work because the coach is aware of the club, culture and ethos.

As a result, it becomes easier for him to marry into the organisation.

They are disastrous if the coach has been hired again after being fired initially. The problems of the past often reveal themselves once more and it is decided that maybe that has been an error of judgement.

Eric Tinkler – Cape Town City

Tinker is the new head coach of Cape Town City. He was hired a few weeks ago after the club let go of Dutchman Jan Olde Riekerink.

Tinkler left Orlando Pirates in 2016 to become the first ever head coach of Cape Town City. He quit his role in 2017 to join SuperSport United, who had a vacancy after Stuart Baxter left to join Bafana Bafana.

Ernst Middendorp – Maritzburg United

The German coach was hired as the new coach at the Team of Choice in 2020 after the club fired Eric Tinkler. Remarkably, he returns to the club for his 4^th stint as head coach.

Middendorp managed them three times before. He has also coached Arminia Bielefeld on more than one occasion in Germany.

Dan Malesela – Chippa United

Dan Dance has also managed The Chilli Boys on 4 separate occasions. Remarkably, he has been fired in each of the last 4 times.

This has backfired on Chilli Boys this time around as they finished 15^th. Their stay in the DSTV Premiership will be determined in the promotion play-offs.
