Hugo Broos Reveals Tough Talk That Reignited Sipho Mbule’s Bafana Bafana Career

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has opened up about a decisive conversation with midfielder Sipho Mbule that led to the player’s recall to the national team. Mbule, who struggled for game time at Mamelodi Sundowns, had been loaned to Sekhukhune United during the 2024/25 season. While he impressed on the field, he faced challenges off it that limited his national team opportunities.

Broos explained that Mbule’s resurgence came after a move to Orlando Pirates, which gave the coach confidence to bring him back into the fold for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria. “You know Sipho was with us from the first day I was here, and immediately I saw what a good player he was. But Sipho had other interests than football, and after a few times I didn’t call him anymore,” Broos said.

The Belgian coach revealed the blunt nature of their discussion at a post-match press conference following South Africa’s 3-0 victory over Rwanda that sealed World Cup qualification. “When we were looking for a replacement for Themba Zwane, we talked about Sipho. He had a good moment at Sekhukhune but then it was again like that,” Broos said.

He continued, describing how he framed the opportunity to Mbule: “‘Listen man, this is your second chance. After this, it’s finished. I give you a chance. If you don’t grab it with two hands, it’s done. You will never be with Bafana Bafana as long as I’m the coach, and don’t forget there is the AFCON in December and maybe the World Cup in July next year. Do you want to be there?’ He said ‘Yes,’ and I said, ‘Okay, show me!’”

Despite not yet being a regular starter at Orlando Pirates, Mbule has shown the qualities that initially impressed Broos. “I never doubted his football qualities. You saw how he is fighting, how he is running. If you have the talent of Sipho, then you can be very happy as a coach,” he added.

Broos concluded by praising Mbule’s response to the challenge. “I told him after the game, ‘You grabbed your chance, congratulations for that.’”

Mbule’s recall reflects both his renewed focus and Broos’s commitment to giving talented players opportunities when they demonstrate the right mindset, particularly with major tournaments such as AFCON and the World Cup approaching.
