The South African national team won 1-0 over Ethiopia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers last night. Head coach Hugo Broos was congratulatory of the fans that made it to FNB Stadium.
For the first time since March 2020, a South African stadium of any sport had fans inside it. There was a total of 2 000 fans in attendance at the FNB Stadium last night.
Although they seemed echoed out in a 94 000 seater stadium, they were instrumental in pushing on the boys. Particularly as the visitors Ethiopia were not going to back down without a fight.
“We had an awful trip last week to Ethiopia, but what the boys did there in Ethiopia in terms of character and mentality was fantastic.” Broos said to the media after the match.
“We tried it today also, but the trip was in the legs of the boys and we saw it. We were not fresh.
“We did not neutralise the midfield, but I can’t blame them for the way they fought for 90 minutes and they wanted that victory, I have to congratulate them,” he added
“The fans … we really hope that for the next game against Zimbabwe we can see even more fans because in games like this when we are suffering, then you have the fans behind you, that gives you energy.
“Let’s hope that today we had 2000, maybe next time we have 10 times more. It should be fantastic.”
Bafana Bafana sits on top of the group, with two matches to go. Hugo Broos Thanks South African Fans After Crucial Victory against Ethiopia!
