Hugo Broos Tips Mbekezeli Mbokazi for Europe After Standout Nigeria Display

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has hailed rising star Mbekezeli Mbokazi as a player destined for Europe after another commanding performance on the international stage.
South Africa boosted their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a crucial 1-1 draw against Nigeria at Free State Stadium on Tuesday night. While the result kept Bafana’s campaign alive, it was the 21-year-old defender who stole the spotlight with a display that drew widespread praise.
Mbokazi registered six clearances and produced a last-gasp block to deny Ademola Lookman what looked like a certain winner in the dying minutes. His composure and defensive intelligence in only his third international cap earned him man-of-the-match recognition.
At club level, the youngster has made rapid strides since his top-flight debut in the second round of the season. He went on to lift the Nedbank Cup Player of the Season award and was also nominated for PSL Young Player of the Season, underlining his growing influence.
Broos believes Mbokazi is ready for the next stage of his career. “Mbokazi… this guy has to go to Europe. He’s 19 years old. You see the way he is playing, it’s like he has 10 years of experience at this level. It’s his second, third game with the national team – third game! You see how he’s playing,” said the Belgian coach.
He added that South African football would benefit if more players took the leap abroad. “So, let’s hope that some players can do the step next here [move to Europe], it will be very good for South African football really.”
Mbokazi will shift his focus back to domestic duty this weekend, as he is set to feature prominently for the Soweto giants in the MTN8 Final against Stellenbosch at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday at 18h00.
All eyes will once again be on the young defender, who has quickly become one of South Africa’s most exciting football prospects.
