Itumeleng Khune Speaks Out on Nasreddine Nabi’s Reported Kaizer Chiefs Exit

Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune has shared his views on the reported departure of head coach Nasreddine Nabi, with the club yet to make an official announcement on the matter.

Nabi has been absent from the dugout for the past two matches, while talks between Chiefs management and the Tunisian tactician over his release continue. His absence has fueled speculation about his future, despite his role in ending Amakhosi’s long trophy drought.

Speaking on the situation, Khune admitted he was disappointed by how events unfolded. “Yeah, it’s unfortunate for what is happening at Kaizer Chiefs. Remember, for the past 10 years, Kaizer Chiefs hasn’t won silverware and the coach now came and broke that curse. So, I wish they could have given him more time because you can see he was building a well-oiled machine, so it’s just unfortunate that things didn’t go well for him,” Khune said.

The veteran goalkeeper, who has witnessed the club’s decade-long struggle for trophies, believes Nabi deserved more time to continue his project. He stressed that the coach’s first season left a lasting mark after delivering silverware at Naturena.

“Hence the club had to come to the conclusion to part ways with him. It’s just an unfortunate situation. I would have loved to see him continuing with the club, but again, Kaizer Chiefs are in business. Players and coaches know that they wouldn’t be at the clubs forever, but it’s very important that when you are given an opportunity, you give it your all. And Coach Nabi did that. In his first season you won the silverware and people will forever remember him for that,” Khune added.

Nabi’s potential exit comes despite guiding Amakhosi to their first trophy since 2015, ending a barren run that had frustrated both fans and players. His short stay at Naturena may be remembered for laying the groundwork for a competitive team, though Khune’s comments underline the sense of unfinished business.

The Soweto giants are now faced with another period of transition as supporters await official word on Nabi’s future and clarity on the next chapter for the club.
