Inácio Miguel’s International Career Door Still Open Amid Kaizer Chiefs Rise

Despite a temporary lull on the international front, Inácio Miguel’s prospects of rejoining the Angolan national team remain firmly alive. Since his arrival at Kaizer Chiefs last year, the towering defender has not only made his presence felt but is now poised for greater leadership responsibilities within the club.
Now in his second season at the Soweto giants, Miguel’s influence on the pitch is unmistakable. With Yusuf Maart recently completing a move to Austrian outfit SV Ried 1912, the door has opened for Miguel to step up as the club’s full-time captain—a role he is already familiar with after donning the armband in eight matches last season.
His rise in prominence at Chiefs has not gone unnoticed by Angola’s national team selectors. Head coach Pedro Gonçalves is said to be closely monitoring the 29-year-old’s performances, with Miguel’s name reportedly among those in serious contention for a recall ahead of September’s international window.
The last time Miguel featured for Palancas Negras was in November 2023, coming off the bench in a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Cape Verde. Though part of the squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, he did not get any playing time. However, his current form and leadership potential could see him back in national colours soon.
Angola are preparing for a crucial stretch of fixtures in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. They face Libya and Mauritius in September, followed by matches against Eswatini and Cameroon in October. Adding even more significance to the calendar, Angola is scheduled to play Brazil in a high-profile international friendly during the November FIFA dates.
Amid his growing stature at Chiefs, Miguel’s personal terms have also attracted attention. Reports from Angola suggest that he earns around R4.6 million per year at Naturena, with his transfer from Petro de Luanda having cost the South African club approximately USD 250,000 (about R4.4 million).
As Miguel prepares to take on more responsibility at Kaizer Chiefs, the door to a revived international career appears more open than ever. With a string of important matches ahead, both club and country may soon rely on his leadership and defensive prowess on the biggest stages.
