CAF to Double Prize Money for Interclub Competitions from Next Season

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a major financial boost for African clubs, revealing plans to increase prize money for its interclub competitions by 100% starting next season. This move signals a strong commitment to the development and competitiveness of club football on the continent.

In a statement released by the governing body, CAF expressed satisfaction with the findings of its Governance Compliance Committee, which had been tasked with assessing governance practices within the CAF Secretariat. The committee found no breaches but recommended improvements to further strengthen internal governance systems.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirmed that all clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup would benefit from the increased financial incentives.

“I am very happy with the processes underway to increase by 100% CAF’s financial contributions to each of the approximately 130 clubs that participate in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup,” said Motsepe.

Last season marked the first time CAF offered direct financial support to competing clubs, distributing $50,000 (approximately R888,000) to each participating team. The new increase will see clubs receiving $100,000 (around R1.7 million) from next season onwards.

During the recent Executive Committee meeting, a shortlist of international marketing companies was also presented. These firms are bidding to partner with CAF in a proposed $1 billion agreement that would span eight years, offering further investment into the game.

“These financial resources will contribute enormously to the development and global competitiveness of African football and investment in youth football development and infrastructure,” Motsepe added.

The CAF president also applauded the performance of African clubs at the recent FIFA Club World Cup and expressed optimism for continued improvement on the world stage.

“CAF is thankful to FIFA and President Gianni Infantino for organising an exciting and world class competition that will contribute to the global competitiveness and growth of African Clubs and Football Clubs worldwide,” he concluded.

This development comes as CAF aims to position African football for long-term growth, increased visibility, and enhanced professionalism across all tiers of the game.
