Jose Riveiro Not Planning Return to South Africa After Al Ahly Exit

Former Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has no immediate plans to return to South Africa following his abrupt departure from Egyptian giants Al Ahly. The Spaniard parted ways with the Cairo-based side after just a handful of matches in the new Egyptian Premier League season, with a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC proving to be the final straw.
Ahly announced the split on Sunday, confirming it was by mutual consent after a Planning Committee meeting that involved club president Mahmoud El Khatib and sporting director Mohamed Youssef. In its statement, the Club of the Century thanked Riveiro and his technical staff for their commitment and energy but admitted that results had not met expectations both domestically and in continental competitions.
Since his exit, speculation has been rife about where the 49-year-old might go next. In South Africa, rumours quickly surfaced about a possible return to the Betway Premiership. However, Siya sources have made it clear that there are no immediate plans for Riveiro to head back to the PSL.
The coach himself had previously ruled out managing any team in South Africa other than the Buccaneers. Speaking at his farewell press conference in May, Riveiro said, “Never… Once a Pirates, Always a Pirates. I will never coach any other team in South Africa. Orlando Pirates are the only club that I could have the motivation and the courage and energy, and the heart in this case to coach in the country, no doubt.”
Riveiro’s record with Pirates made him one of the most successful modern-era coaches at the Soweto giants. He secured five domestic trophies in three seasons, including three straight MTN8 titles and back-to-back Nedbank Cups. His tenure ended on a high note when Pirates beat Golden Arrows 3-0 in his final match before his move to Al Ahly.
Despite his short stint in Cairo, Riveiro’s reputation remains intact. Sources have indicated that he will take time to consider his next move carefully. Interest has already begun to surface from other parts of the continent, with Algeria reportedly keeping tabs on the coach.
If opportunities in North Africa materialize, Riveiro’s next chapter could see him remain in the region rather than making a return to familiar ground in Mzansi. For now, the Spaniard is weighing his options as he plans the next step in his managerial career.
