Maritzburg United took the lead through Thabiso Kutumela in the 10th minute. The Team of Choice profited of an error from former player Richard Ofori.
The Buccaneers completely turned the tide around in the second half. Josef Zinnbauer introduced midfielder Kabelo Dlamini at halftime.
This saw Pirates score 3 goals in the second stanza.
“Dlamini is a player he needs small spaces, unbelievable, he’s a top player when he has a tight space, he finds always a good solution and he can score, we know this,” the German tactician told SuperSport TV.
“He was long time out now he comes closer, step by step to the squad and in the team now, he did this very well and I’m happy about this.
“The players understand it’s not enough what we did in the first-half, they have to understand you can’t play 70 or 80 percent against Maritzburg in a cup game, a cup game is a final game always.
“All cup games [are] a final game, Maritzburg made this very well, we know this as a player you go casual in the game, we start good but then we’re too casual. In the second half they understand that it’s not possible to win the game with this performance.
“We changed, the team changed, tactically, this was the right way.
“It’s not so easy, Maritzburg is not a bad team, in the past time they made a very good game, but they have a little bit unluck at the moment to score, we know this.
“You see we made a mistake in defence, we were not so in the game, they made the space very tight, this was the reason in the first-half we were not so in the game, a lot of good attacks.
“We came to the last third but the solution, the decision [making] was not right. At half-time we spoke about this in the dressing room and we changed a little bit the system and it comes better in the game.
“You see Dlamini comes in, he scored, Pule makes the next step. We have then this, what we expect from Pirates, take the control of the game, lead the game, and win the game, that’s the point we had to do. We knew before it was tough, but I think deserved.” the coach concluded.
