Kaizer Chiefs Confident in Attack Despite New Signings Delay

Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has expressed confidence in the team’s attacking options despite being unable to field new signings Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva in their opening two Betway Premiership matches. There is encouraging news as paperwork for Silva is expected soon, potentially adding depth to the squad.

Youssef highlighted the performances of young players Wandile Duba and Naledi Hlongwane, saying they have earned their opportunities and can carry the attacking responsibilities until the new arrivals are cleared to play. Speaking during the team’s media open day ahead of their match against Richards Bay, he emphasized the squad does not rely solely on unavailable players.

“We don’t depend if Ethan is not here. If Silva is not here. We have players who are here. If they are here they deserve to play. We have Wandile. We have Naledi. We are waiting for Silva. So whoever is ready will play. When Silva is ready, he is a better solution. Now, as you said, the issue is the paperwork. When it’s ready, he will play,” Youssef said.

Reports indicate Chiefs are also close to completing the signing of Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro. The club has been waiting for paperwork to register him as a local player in South Africa, which would provide another attacking option.

Youssef confirmed that improving defensive stability was the primary focus during preseason after last season’s struggles at the back. Chiefs have already recorded two clean sheets in their first two matches. He also provided updates on injured defenders Rushwin Dortley and Given Msimango, stating both are close to returning to full training.

“Dortley has kept on working with our medical staff. They did a very good job with him. I think soon, in a few weeks, he will be back, him and Given to restart training with the team,” he said.

Youssef also reflected on last season’s defensive injuries, which forced the promotion of young defender Aden McCarthy. With Dortley and Msimango set to return, he believes competition and experience in the defensive unit will improve the squad.

Chiefs have strengthened their backline by signing Thabiso Monyane, Paseka Mako, and Nkanyiso Shinga, reinforcing the defensive options as part of their strategy to address last season’s shortcomings.

The team now looks set to benefit from both young talent and returning experienced players, with the coaching staff confident in their ability to balance attack and defence in the upcoming fixtures.
