Kaizer Chiefs Defender Zitha Kwinika Thrives Amid Defensive Injury Crisis

Kaizer Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika is embracing increased game time as the club navigates a challenging injury situation in defence. With key players sidelined, Kwinika has stepped up to become a reliable figure in the Gold and Black rearguard.
Chiefs have struggled defensively this season. Given Msimango and Rushwin Dortley have been out for over five months, while Aden McCarthy, Reeve Frosler, Paseka Mako, and Thabiso Monyane have all faced injury niggles. This has left the squad thin at the back, prompting players like Inacio Miguel and Kwinika to take on leading roles.
Kwinika, who was largely overlooked last season, has welcomed the opportunity. He told the club’s media, “At this point, I think I am doing well. I am happy about that, getting minutes and maybe performing to the highest level. But what is important is the team. When we get results, it makes everything nice and builds the confidence you need.”
Chiefs’ recent form in the CAF Confederation Cup has been mixed. The team drew 1-1 at home against Egyptian side Zamalek at New Peter Mokaba Stadium, marking their second game without maximum points in the group stage. Kwinika acknowledged the setback but emphasized the learning process.
“In the CAF, we didn’t get the result we wanted, but there are still more games to play. We have learned from the past few games and are preparing for the upcoming matches. We probably need to get maximum points to qualify,” he said.
In domestic action, Chiefs are third on the Betway Premiership log with 22 points from 11 matches. They face bottom-of-the-table Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Wednesday at 19:30. Kwinika’s resurgence in defence will be crucial as the Soweto giants aim to maintain their challenge for the league title while managing injuries.
