Kaizer Chiefs Expand Right-Back Search to Europe Amid Defensive Uncertainty

With question marks looming over their current defensive lineup, Kaizer Chiefs have taken decisive steps to widen their recruitment net — going as far as Europe in search of solutions at right back. The Soweto giants, eager to bolster their squad ahead of the new season, are now tracking a South African-born defender currently plying his trade in Portugal.

Sources close to the club have revealed that 24-year-old Mhleli Innocent Mabuza, who plays for Portuguese side Louletano DC, has caught the attention of Amakhosi scouts. Chiefs are believed to have been monitoring Mabuza’s progress for some time, viewing the KwaZulu-Natal-born fullback as a potential asset in a position that needs urgent reinforcement.

“Right back is one of the areas they’re determined to strengthen next season,” a source informed Soccer Laduma. “Mabuza, despite being based abroad, is still seen as someone who could return home and make a big impact. The technical team believes he has the quality and the hunger to succeed at a club like Chiefs.”

Mabuza’s European experience adds weight to his profile. Having moved to Portugal in 2019, he first joined Lusitano before securing a spot at Louletano DC, where he has become a regular feature in the squad over the past two seasons.

However, Mabuza is not the only player under consideration. Chiefs are also looking at domestic alternatives. One such name is Richards Bay right-back Lwandile Mabuya, while internal promotion remains on the table, with promising youth prospect Sifiso Timba being evaluated for a potential first-team role.

“You can’t build a strong squad by relying on just one or two players,” added a second insider. “Look at Sundowns — they have multiple right-backs and maintain strong competition in every position. Chiefs are aiming to create a similar environment with multiple options to choose from.”

The move to scout both local and international talent signals a shift in recruitment strategy under the expected leadership of incoming coach Nasreddine Nabi. Chiefs, who recently claimed Nedbank Cup glory, appear poised for a rebuild that emphasizes depth, competition, and long-term development.

With no official comment yet from the club, fans will be watching closely as the transfer window approaches. What’s clear is that the hunt for a reliable right back is at the top of Chiefs’ agenda — and Mabuza could be the first of several fresh faces at Naturena next season.
