Kaizer Chiefs’ Lost Gem Replaces Sundowns Star in Bafana Squad as Broos Makes Key Changes for World Cup Qualifiers

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has been forced to make another adjustment to his squad ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The latest change sees Sekhukhune United left-back Vuyo Letlapa called up to replace Mamelodi Sundowns’ Aubrey Modiba.
Broos had earlier confirmed that Modiba was unlikely to be available for the qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, as the Sundowns defender was given time off to be with his wife following the birth of their child. With this absence, Letlapa has been handed a golden opportunity to make his mark on the international stage.
Bafana Bafana Squad Adjustments Continue
This is the second alteration Broos has made to his squad in quick succession. Earlier, he called up Polokwane City’s Ndamulelo Maphangule to replace Orlando Pirates midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi, who had to withdraw due to injury.
The Buccaneers star was also absent from his club’s recent 1-0 win over Sundowns in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), further confirming his unavailability for the national team’s upcoming fixtures.
Broos’ Explanation for Modiba’s Absence
Speaking to the media on Monday, Broos emphasized the importance of family responsibilities, stating, “It’s been a long time since we started a camp with 23 players present, but one is not here, Aubrey Modiba. He has something more important than being at camp with the national team as his wife gives birth. This is why Aubrey is not here. He might join us later, but I think these things are more important in life than a qualification game for the World Cup.”
A Big Break for Letlapa
The call-up represents a significant step in Letlapa’s career. The 21-year-old full-back has impressed for Sekhukhune United since joining from Jomo Cosmos, quickly becoming one of the club’s standout players.
Interestingly, before he joined Babina Noko, Kaizer Chiefs were strongly linked with a move for him, but he ultimately opted to sign with Sekhukhune United alongside midfielder Thabang Monare and goalkeeper Loydt Kazapua.
Replacing Modiba will be no easy task for Letlapa, given that the Sundowns defender has been a key player under Broos. However, his performances for Sekhukhune—including three assists and a Man of the Match award against Richards Bay—indicate that he is ready for the challenge.
What’s Next for Letlapa and Bafana?
If given the opportunity to play, Letlapa must seize the moment and prove his worth at the international level. With competition for places in the national team fierce, strong performances could help cement his place in Broos’ plans moving forward.
Bafana Bafana will take on Lesotho on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium before traveling to face Benin four days later. The South African squad will be aiming for maximum points as they continue their journey towards qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
