Kaizer Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup Defence Ends Early After Stellenbosch Upset

Kaizer Chiefs’ Nedbank Cup defence ended abruptly after a 2 to 1 defeat to Stellenbosch at the Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday, February 4. The round of 32 encounter delivered high intensity football and decisive moments that shaped the outcome before halftime. Chiefs came into the match in strong form after winning their opening four games of the year and were expected to build momentum in knockout competition. Stellenbosch entered the fixture under pressure following back to back defeats in Africa’s second tier club competition. By full time, it was the home side that advanced, leaving the Soweto giants with an early exit.
The opening stages were lively, with both teams showing attacking intent. Gaston Sirino fired wide in the second minute, while Chumani Butsaka and Flavio Silva both failed to test the goalkeeper with early headers. Stellenbosch were given a crucial opportunity on 10 minutes when Silva caught Thabo Moloisane with a raised boot inside the penalty area. Ibraheem Jabaar kept his composure to convert the spot kick on an emotional evening. The goal settled the hosts and gave them confidence to dictate the tempo.
Kaizer Chiefs looked for a quick response and nearly found one in the 17th minute. Mduduzi Shabalala broke through one on one with the goalkeeper, but Sage Stephens stood firm with an important save. That miss proved costly as Stellenbosch struck again five minutes later. Devin Titus reacted sharply to a loose ball outside the area and unleashed a powerful strike into the top left corner. Brandon Petersen had no chance as the ball flew into the net, giving the hosts a two goal cushion.
Chiefs continued to push and showed moments of quality despite trailing. Shabalala had another chance on 35 minutes after finding space inside the box, but Stephens once again denied him with a strong block. The visitors enjoyed spells of possession but struggled to turn pressure into clear chances. Stellenbosch defended with discipline and remained dangerous when breaking forward. At the interval, Chiefs faced a difficult task against a well organised opponent.
The second half brought renewed hope for the visitors. Eleven minutes after the restart, Mosa Lebusa handled the ball inside the area and conceded a penalty. Flavio Silva converted confidently to reduce the deficit and lift Chiefs’ belief. Stellenbosch nearly restored their two goal advantage on 65 minutes when substitute Langelihle Phili tested Petersen, who produced an excellent save. Chiefs pressed hard in the closing stages, with Thulani Mabaso coming closest in the 87th minute when his shot flew just over the crossbar.
The win carried emotional significance for Stellenbosch as they honoured the memory of Jeandre Gaffoor, who passed away at the age of 20 on February 1. The young defender had featured for their DStv Diski Challenge side just a day earlier, making the occasion deeply personal for the squad. The players responded with unity, focus and resilience throughout the match. For Stellenbosch, the result provides a timely boost and keeps their cup journey alive. For Kaizer Chiefs, the defeat ends their defence early and highlights the fine margins that define knockout football.
