Banyana Banyana players recently boycotted a game because of issues pertaining to their bonuses. Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart likened the fight to that of world icon Nelson Mandela.
The ladies boycotted their farewell match against Botswana last weekend because their bonuses for participating in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was not included in their contracts. This made them fear that SAFA would take the money for themselves.
In addition to the FIFA bonus, the players made demands of bonuses from SAFA. The association claimed to not have any funds.
Eventually, the Motsepe Foundation donated R6 million to the squad, meaning each player will walk away with an additional R230 000.
“Ya, if it means we walk this talk right now then you know the next generation will be able to fly,” Swart spoke, as per SABC Sport.
“Nelson fought for us, and I think now we could say that he walked so we could fly.
“I think if this is the start of a new generation to come then I think we made ourselves proud and hopefully we can make ourselves proud in 10 years’ time when the new generation comes through, and they don’t have to fight these battles.
“I think it will definitely be a win for us if we come back in 10 years and you know what we fought for now has been resolved and the girls are treated the way they should be. Then we’ll be very happy with the results.” She concluded.
