Kegan Johannes Set to Stay at Mamelodi Sundowns After Impressive Return

Kegan Johannes’ future at Mamelodi Sundowns appeared uncertain earlier this season, but recent performances have changed the narrative for the 24-year-old defender. A proposed loan move to Siwelele FC fell through, and it was expected that Sundowns would make another attempt to offload him during the current transfer window. Since the return of local football after the Africa Cup of Nations, however, Johannes has started two Betway Premiership matches and reportedly impressed both management and the technical team.

In his appearances as a central defender, Johannes has helped Sundowns keep clean sheets against Orbit College and Sekhukhune United. His consistent performances have strengthened the belief within his camp that he could remain at Chloorkop beyond this season, provided his form continues. To date, Johannes has made six appearances in all competitions, matching the total he managed across the entirety of last term.

The club is increasingly focused on building its defensive options for the future, with senior players Mothobi Mvala and Grant Kekana now in their 30s. Sundowns already have promising talents such as Malibongwe Khoza and Khulumani Ndamane, while Keanu Cupido remains a dependable option in the long term. Johannes’ emergence adds another young, reliable choice to this pool, giving the team depth and continuity at the back.

The final months of the season will be crucial in determining Johannes’ long-term role at Sundowns. For now, he appears set to remain at Chloorkop and could become a key figure in the club’s defensive plans if he maintains his upward trajectory.
