Bafana Bafana was knocked out in the group stages of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Comedian Loyiso Gola claims to have seen Katlego Mphela clubbing during the showpiece event.

Mphela was South Africa’s number one striker during the competition. He fended off the likes of Bernard Parker, Benni McCarthy, Surprise Moriri and Siyabonga Nomvethe for that number 9 position.

Gola revealed that the striker walked into a club in Sandton and had to be escorted out because it was during the World Cup.

“It was 2010, it’s a party its lit and then Katlego Mphela walks in. 2010 World Cup dawg!! We were shocked. I was there, they escorted them out, ‘gents you can’t be here.’” Gola recites to Mac G on Podcast and Chill.

“There’s a certain level of conduct you must have. They are inside the World Cup [still in the World Cup] at home, now you’re at the club.

“Now, here’s my thing; you want me as a ticket holder to cheer for you while I was partying with you last night? Get out of here!” he lamented.

Retirement

The striker retired from professional football in 2017, at NFD club Royal Eagles (now Royal AM).

“I think in terms of life I would say I’m satisfied.” Mphela told Shoot Online in 2021.

“Because‚ as you know‚ where I come from is a very difficult place to live. And I gave people hope there.

“Now if someone mentions the name Brits‚ or you mention my name‚ people know the place now. And I gave a lot of people belief.

“Not only in soccer. They believe they can make it in life.” He spoke.
