Lucas Ribeiro Costa Dominates 2024/25 PSL Awards with Four Major Wins

Mamelodi Sundowns’ Brazilian forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa emerged as the standout star at the 2024/25 PSL Awards ceremony held on Tuesday evening, taking home an impressive four top accolades. His stellar performances throughout the season earned him the prestigious PSL Footballer of the Season title, along with Betway Premiership Players’ Player of the Season, Betway Premiership Goal of the Season, and Betway Premiership Top Goal Scorer awards.
Ribeiro Costa’s commanding presence in front of goal and consistent excellence were pivotal to Sundowns’ campaign, making him the undeniable centrepiece of the night.
Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates’ teenage prodigy Relebohile Mofokeng continued to build on his rising star status by clinching two significant awards: Betway Premiership Young Player of the Season and MTN8 Last Man Standing. The 19-year-old’s flair and composure under pressure made him a fan favourite and a critical player for the Buccaneers this season.
In the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Muzomuhle Khanyi of Hungry Lions was recognised for his remarkable season, securing both the Players’ Player of the Season and Top Goal Scorer awards. Teboho Lekhatla of Casric Stars took home the Young Player of the Season, while Durban City’s Dumsani Msibi was honoured as Goalkeeper of the Season.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ success was further highlighted with Miguel Cardoso being named Betway Premiership Coach of the Season, underlining the club’s dominance across multiple fronts.
The Orlando Pirates defensive unit also saw significant recognition, with Sipho Chaine awarded Goalkeeper of the Season, Nkosinathi Sibisi named Defender of the Season, and Makhehleni Makhaula clinching Midfielder of the Season.
In cup competitions, Kaizer Chiefs’ Pule Mmodi stood out in the Nedbank Cup, earning the Player of the Tournament award. Orlando Pirates’ Mbekezeli Mbokazi was acknowledged as the Most Promising Player, while Elvis Chipezeze of Magesi FC shone in the Carling Knockout, claiming the Player of the Tournament honour.
The youth development platform DStv Diski Challenge also spotlighted emerging talent, with Stellenbosch FC’s Tylon Smith named Player of the Season and Orlando Pirates’ Siphamandla Msezane securing the Top Goal Scorer award.
Match officials were not left behind, as Masixole Bambiso was awarded Referee of the Season, and Kgara Mokoena received the Assistant Referee of the Season title.
The 2024/25 PSL Awards celebrated not just individual brilliance but the depth of talent across South African football, from seasoned professionals to exciting young prospects and unsung heroes in officiating.
