Makhehlene Makhaula Focused on Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates as Contract Nears End

Makhehlene Makhaula has been a key figure for Orlando Pirates since joining the Soweto giants in January 2023 from AmaZulu. Over the past two seasons, the 36-year-old midfielder has contributed significantly to one of the club’s most successful periods, helping Pirates lift multiple domestic cup trophies.
Makhaula’s influence on the pitch was recognised in the 2024/25 season when he was named PSL Midfielder of the Season, edging out Mamelodi Sundowns duo Teboho Mokoena and Marcelo Allende for the accolade. His performances underline that, despite his age, he remains a central figure in Pirates’ squad.
However, Makhaula now faces a critical stage in his career. His current contract is set to expire in June, following a one-year extension signed before the season. Under FIFA regulations, players in the final six months of their contracts may negotiate pre-contract agreements with other clubs if their current team has not secured their future.
Sources indicate that Orlando Pirates still regard Makhaula as vital to their league title ambitions under coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. Despite speculation over his future, no contract negotiations have taken place yet. Makhaula is focused on finishing the season strongly before making any decisions.
A source familiar with the situation explained, “Makhaula and Pirates have not started negotiations. The player is not rushing things; he is waiting for the team to let him know what the future is, and his focus is on helping the team win the league title. At 36, he knows if Pirates want him to stay, they will make an offer, but he is happy to wait until the end of the season to decide.”
The source added that signing a pre-contract elsewhere is not an option for Makhaula. “He feels he still has a chance to play and contribute at Pirates until the end of the season. That is where he can decide his future if the team does not act.”
Reports last year suggested that, given his performances and the Midfielder of the Season award, Pirates are likely to offer Makhaula a new contract, reflecting the club’s confidence in his continued contribution.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Makhaula and Pirates to see whether the club moves quickly to secure one of their most influential players before the veteran midfielder considers other options.
