Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Explains Decision to Bench Peter Shalulile Against Kaizer Chiefs

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has explained why striker Peter Shalulile did not feature in the goalless draw against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

The match extended Sundowns’ unbeaten start to the season, but many fans were surprised to see Shalulile remain on the bench. The Namibian striker has been a constant threat for Chiefs in the past, scoring 10 goals in 17 appearances against them.

Cardoso said the decision was tactical. Speaking to SuperSport TV, he stressed that Shalulile remains an important part of the squad.

“Peter will have opportunities for sure. The question is what kind of game you are playing and depending on the kind of game we are playing, Peter will be used for sure,” Cardoso said.

He added that Shalulile’s strengths lie in tight attacking spaces when the team pushes high. “Peter is a player that in short spaces he is fantastic when the team is high to play short spaces, play in the box, he knows very well how to read the game. So, that is the Peter we are going to use. Peter and everybody in this group is very valuable for us. We don’t reject anyone, we just manage the right player, moment and occasion.”

Sundowns will now shift focus to their next fixture against Stellenbosch FC this weekend in Cape Town. Cardoso acknowledged the challenge ahead and highlighted the importance of recovery and player assessment.

“Another tough game, beautiful team. I think it will be important to recover, assess well the players, and see who is able to go for the fight. Stellenbosch has more than 24 hours of recovery, they played yesterday. I think with this spirit, we are much closer to win, much closer to win a match like this one and the one we are going to play in Stellenbosch,” he said.

Sundowns remain strong contenders in the league, and Cardoso’s player management will be key as they navigate a busy schedule. Fans will be eager to see when Shalulile returns to the pitch, especially given his proven record in big matches.
