Mamelodi Sundowns Crush Remo Stars 5-1 in CAF Champions League First-Leg Showdown

Mamelodi Sundowns sent a strong message across the continent with a 5-1 demolition of Nigerian champions Remo Stars in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round first-leg on Sunday evening. The result put the South African giants in full control ahead of the return leg in Nigeria.

Masandawana’s head coach Miguel Cardoso unveiled a new attacking trio featuring new signings Nuno Santos and Reisinho alongside veteran striker Peter Shalulile. The combination clicked immediately, showing fluid movement and sharp finishing.

Tashreeq Matthews opened the scoring in the 12th minute after pouncing on a loose ball at the edge of the box and firing a thunderous shot into the top corner. His strike gave Sundowns early momentum and set the tone for a dominant performance.

Remo Stars tried to fight back, pushing high and testing Sundowns’ defense with quick transitions. However, the hosts’ backline, led by Mothobi Mvala and Khuliso Mudau, stood firm and kept the visitors at bay.

Two minutes before halftime, Shalulile doubled the lead. He latched onto a precise through ball and calmly slotted it into the bottom corner, making it 2-0. Moments later, Remo almost pulled one back, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams made a crucial reflex save to deny a close-range effort.

Sundowns continued to dominate after the restart. In the 52nd minute, Mudau surged down the right flank and squared a low cross that found Reisinho, who tapped home for his debut goal. The Brazilian’s composed finish stretched the lead to 3-0.

Coach Cardoso then introduced substitutes Kutlwano Letlhaku and Arthur Sales to inject fresh energy. The move paid off late in the game. In the 81st minute, Sales received a lay-off from Santos and unleashed a well-timed volley into the net, making it 4-0 and effectively sealing the tie.

Remo Stars managed a consolation goal in the 88th minute when Olasupo exchanged a quick one-two and beat Williams with a clever finish. However, Sundowns were not done. In added time, Katlego Ntsabeleng linked up with Lebo Mothiba to slot in the fifth goal, capping a dominant night at Loftus Versfeld.

The 5-1 victory underlined Sundowns’ intent to go deep into this season’s competition after falling short in last year’s final. The performance also showcased the team’s depth and the immediate impact of their new signings.

Line-ups:
Mamelodi Sundowns: Williams, Mudau, Khoza, Cupido, Mokoena, Mdoba, Allende, Matthews, Shalulile, Santos, Reisinho
Subs: Onyango, Adams, Sales, Aubaas, Lethlaku, Kekana, Lunga, Ntsabeleng, Mothiba

The return leg in Nigeria will test Remo Stars’ resilience, but Sundowns hold a commanding advantage that few teams have overturned in CAF competition.
