Mamelodi Sundowns Eye Return of ‘Ferrari’ Mabuza Following Thabo Cele’s Successful Chiefs Comeback

Following Thabo Cele’s impressive return to South African football with Kaizer Chiefs, yet another Mzansi export could be on his way back home—this time, with Mamelodi Sundowns showing keen interest.

The reigning Betway Premiership champions are believed to be tracking 24-year-old right back Mhleli Innocent Mabuza, a product of the KZN Football Academy, who currently plies his trade in Portugal for Louletano DC.

Cele, who rejoined Chiefs in January from Russian outfit Fakel Voronezh, has quickly become a standout performer for the Soweto giants. His influence has been instrumental in guiding Amakhosi to the Nedbank Cup final, including a key role in their recent victory over Sundowns. His transition has been so seamless that he’s now become a symbol of successful returns from Europe.

Now, Mabuza—fondly nicknamed “Ferrari” for his electric pace and attacking dynamism—could follow in Cele’s footsteps. A source close to the situation has revealed that Sundowns are considering a formal move for the player.

“Sundowns have identified Mhleli Innocent Mabuza as a potential signing for the club. He is a South African right-back who is playing in Portugal for Louletano DC. The club has been following him, with the possibility of making a formal approach to begin talks with his club in Portugal,” the source shared.

Mabuza began his European journey in 2018, joining Galitos FC’s U19 setup before going on to feature for Lusitano Ginasio Clube, Paredes FC, and AC Vila Mea. His development in the competitive Portuguese lower leagues has shaped him into a modern full-back—one comfortable both in defence and when joining the attack.

Sundowns, known for their commitment to depth and squad rotation, could see Mabuza as a strategic acquisition, especially with their heavy fixture schedule across domestic and continental fronts.

This interest also aligns with a growing trend of PSL clubs looking to bring homegrown talent back from Europe. Alongside Mabuza, another overseas-based South African, Sphephelo “Yaya” Sithole, is also reportedly being monitored by local teams.

Should the move materialize, Mabuza’s return would be another testament to the growing appeal of the PSL as a competitive and attractive league for returning South Africans. As Chiefs reap the rewards of Cele’s comeback, Sundowns may be hoping for similar success with their potential new “Ferrari.”
