Mamelodi Sundowns Face Midfield Test as Season Reaches Halfway Mark

Mamelodi Sundowns will reach the halfway stage of their Betway Premiership campaign with key adjustments required as they prepare to face Sekhukhune United. The match takes place at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday evening with kick off set for 19:30. The defending champions arrive without one of their most influential players. Teboho Mokoena will miss the clash as he serves the second game of a two match domestic suspension following his red card against Siwelele FC in December. The ban does not apply to continental competition, which allowed the Bafana Bafana midfielder to feature against Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League on Friday.
Mokoena made his presence felt in that match. He delivered a commanding performance in central midfield and capped it with a powerful long range goal. He already sat out the first game of his suspension against Orbit College FC and will be available again after the Sekhukhune fixture. His return will come at a busy period for Sundowns. The Brazilians are set to play three consecutive CAF Champions League matches and Mokoena will also be eligible for the Nedbank Cup Last 32 as well as the league showdown against Orlando Pirates. Earlier this season, the 28 year old was also forced to miss the Soweto Derby in November after accumulating four yellow cards.
With Mokoena sidelined, Sundowns will rely on Bathusi Aubaas, Siphelele Mkhulise, and Marcelo Allende to control the midfield. The trio will be tasked with maintaining tempo and breaking down a disciplined Sekhukhune side. Aubaas will need to be cautious as he sits one booking away from suspension. Discipline remains a wider concern for the squad. Keanu Cupido and Aubrey Modiba are both on three yellow cards and close to serving bans of their own. Managing minutes and challenges will be critical as the season intensifies.
Despite watching from home, Mokoena underlined the importance of the Sekhukhune match. He described it as key for team morale ahead of the upcoming Champions League fixtures. He stressed that the team remains focused on taking one game at a time while staying aware of the log standings. As Sundowns chase consistency and control at the halfway point of the season, the test against Sekhukhune United offers another measure of their depth and resilience without one of their leaders on the pitch.
