Mamelodi Sundowns Remain Contenders Despite Early Criticism Says Sekhukhune United Coach Eric Tinkler

Despite criticism surrounding Mamelodi Sundowns’ start to the Betway Premiership, Sekhukhune United head coach Eric Tinkler believes it is too early to write off the defending champions. Sundowns currently sit third in the league with 11 points from five matches, winning three and drawing two. While some observers question their ability to maintain dominance, Tinkler insists their early form remains competitive.

Speaking to Soccer Laduma, Tinkler emphasized the significance of Sundowns’ performance from a top-of-the-table perspective, with Sekhukhune United leading the standings. “I always put pressure on myself. I demand a lot from myself and my team. Pressure keeps you focused and motivates you to achieve more. It’s still early days. Do I believe we can win the league? It will be a massive challenge, but Mamelodi Sundowns have 11 points from five games. That is still league-winning form. People are ruling them out too early,” Tinkler said.

Tinkler stressed that consistency over 30 matches, not just early-season results, determines championship success. He reflected on Sekhukhune’s own encouraging start, highlighting the fine margins in football. “There is a thin line between success and failure. In our first game against TS Galaxy, we were 2-0 down but showed character to win. It could have gone the other way. That illustrates how fine the line is. My methods, preparations, and work ethic haven’t changed in 10 years, and the players have responded positively,” he explained.

The 55-year-old coach attributed Sekhukhune’s performance to maintaining consistent preparation methods throughout his career. “Experience may have changed me, but my planning, expectations, and demanding standards remain. This season, players have responded well,” Tinkler added.

Reflecting on his previous role at Cape Town City, Tinkler accepted responsibility for the club’s relegation last season. He revealed he had recently discussed the situation with former chairman John Comitis. “We probably took too many risks with younger players, and some senior players didn’t respond as expected. You learn lessons in recruitment and timing with youth players. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t,” he said.

Sekhukhune United face their next major test on September 16 at FNB Stadium against second-placed Kaizer Chiefs. Tinkler views the fixture as an opportunity to demonstrate that consistent preparation and demanding standards can deliver positive results, regardless of pressure or external expectations.

This match will provide further insight into both teams’ credentials and the competitive dynamics of the Betway Premiership this season.
