Mamelodi Sundowns Return to Betway Premiership Summit with 2-0 Win Over Orbit College

Mamelodi Sundowns reclaimed the top spot in the Betway Premiership after a comfortable 2-0 victory against Orbit College at Loftus Versfeld on Monday, January 19. Goals in each half from Arthur Sales and new signing Brayan Leon ensured Miguel Cardoso’s side leapfrogged Orlando Pirates, sitting one point clear while the Sea Robbers retain two games in hand.

The win was Sundowns’ first of the new year and came after a slow end to 2025, where they collected just eight points from five matches, including a 1-1 draw with Siwelele on December 3. Orbit College, meanwhile, entered the match hoping to end a three-game losing streak that left them just two points above the relegation zone in 13th place.

The hosts started strongly, with Jayden Adams connecting with a volley in the fourth minute, only to be denied by the goal frame. Sundowns took the lead in the 22nd minute when Sales blocked an attempted clearance from goalkeeper Cyril Chibwe and improvised an overhead-kick into the net, giving the Mswenko Boyz an early advantage. Lebo Mothiba almost doubled the lead on 26 minutes, but Chibwe quickly off his line denied him.

Chibwe’s debut ended prematurely due to injury, forcing Sabelo Nkomo to take over in goal for Orbit College in the 59th minute. Sundowns added a second in the 65th minute when Brayan Leon, who had only been on the field for 19 minutes, headed home a cross from Thato Sibiya. The visitors offered little threat throughout the match, leaving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams with a quiet game. Miguel Reisinho nearly scored late for Sundowns, but his effort in the 82nd minute was cleared off the line.

The final scoreline read Mamelodi Sundowns 2 (Sales 22’, Leon 65’) Orbit College 0. Sundowns’ starting lineup featured R. Williams, K. Johannes, G. Kekana, T. Sibiya, T. Morena, S. Mkhulise, J. Adams, T. Matthews, A. Sales, L. Mothiba, and K. Lethlaku, with Leon, Reisinho, Nuno Santos, M. Allende, and T. Zwane coming off the bench. Orbit College fielded C. Chibwe, K. Mkhabela, R. Mphahlele, T. Nhlapo, T. Jingana, R. Potsana, A. Batsi, L. Modimoeng, T. Mokwena, L. Mahlatsi, and I. Ramosala.

With this result, Sundowns put pressure on title rivals Orlando Pirates and head into their next fixtures with renewed confidence, demonstrating their attacking depth and squad strength early in 2026.
