Mamelodi Sundowns Set To Retire The Number 16 Shirt!
They will follow in the footsteps of Belgian club KRC Genk. This is the number that Anele Ngcongca wore for both sides.
Mamelodi Sundowns Set To Retire The Number 16 Shirt! The number had already been used by Aubrey Modiba.
Modiba was given the number 16 at the beginning of the season when he transferred from arch rivals SuperSport United.
The number had been left vacant by Anele Ngcongca who was set to move to KZN side AmaZulu in the transfer window.
Modiba played the early stages of the season in the number 16 shirt. But it was noticeable on the weekend against Stellenbosch FC that he was now wearing the number 37 shirt.
“The fact that Modiba has already played an official match in a different number to the one that he started the season with is a clear indication that they want to retire the number.” A club insider told TIMESLive.
According to the insider, the club plan to announce the number 16 retirement after Ngcongca’s funeral over the coming week.
“It is also clear that they have already engaged the league and there were approvals because you can’t just change numbers as you want. Expect an announcement after the funeral,” the insider concluded.
Both Sundowns and Stellenbosch paid tribute to the former right back by warming up in shirts with his name and image. The game was also brought to a halt in the 16th minute where both sets of teams applauded Ngcongca.
