Mandla Masango Hails Wandile Duba: “He Has a Big Heart and the Arrogance Needed to Succeed”

Former South Africa under-20 international Wandile Duba has received high praise from ex-Kaizer Chiefs winger and two-time PSL champion Mandla Masango. The 20-year-old striker, who has quickly emerged as one of the bright sparks in Amakhosi’s current campaign, was recently named Man of the Match following a crucial Nedbank Cup semi-final victory over Mamelodi Sundowns.
Duba netted one of the goals in Chiefs’ impressive 2-1 win, securing a place in the final where they will meet arch-rivals Orlando Pirates at Moses Mabhida Stadium. It was another standout display in a season that has seen the youngster rise to the club’s top scorer — a sign of maturity beyond his years.
Masango, who himself rose through the Chiefs ranks before making his mark internationally, lauded Duba’s growth and tenacity, highlighting his fearless attitude on the field.
“Duba is a player with a lot of potential. As a country, we have problems with scoring goals, and as young as he is – he has a big heart,” Masango said. “He nearly injured himself again chasing a goal, but that’s what you want to see — bravery and hunger.”
Masango also touched on the importance of Duba embracing a bit of “arrogance” to assert himself against top defenders.
“You need that sense of arrogance on the field, so you don’t get overshadowed. He’s mobile, makes clever runs, and has a good eye for goal,” Masango added.
Originally deployed in wider attacking roles, Duba has recently cemented his place as a central striker, a position where his instincts and movement shine. Having come through the Chiefs development system, many fans now see him as a symbol of the club’s future.
In 21 appearances this season, Duba has recorded six goals and three assists. Despite a recent injury scare, his quick recovery and return to form have been critical for Nasreddine Nabi’s side as they push for silverware and a top-eight league finish.
While coach Nabi has praised Duba’s progress, he’s also emphasized the need for improvement in the youngster’s mental approach to the game, hinting that full maturity will make him even more dangerous.
With the Nedbank Cup final on the horizon and big expectations placed on his shoulders, Duba has the perfect platform to prove his credentials. If he continues on this trajectory, South African football might have found its next great number nine.
