Marumo Gallants Stun Mamelodi Sundowns with First-Half Lead in Betway Premiership Clash

Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves trailing 1-0 to Marumo Gallants FC at halftime in their Betway Premiership encounter on Wednesday evening.

Gallants Take the Lead

A much-rotated Sundowns side struggled to break down the home team, with veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango the only player retained from their recent Nedbank Cup triumph over Mpheni Home Defenders.

The Brazilians had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the match when Jayden Adams found himself unmarked in the box, but his header from close range sailed just over the bar.

Lucas Ribeiro, one of Sundowns’ most dangerous attackers, also came close with a curling effort from outside the area, but Gallants shot-stopper Washington Arubi pulled off an outstanding save to deny him.

Despite their dominance in possession, Sundowns fell behind in the final minutes of the first half. Marumo Gallants striker Junior Dion rose highest at the back post to head home a pinpoint cross from Daniel Msendami, sending the home fans into celebration.

Sundowns Struggle to Respond

Gallants, emboldened by their lead, pushed forward in search of a second goal before the interval, utilizing their width and pace on the counterattack. However, Sundowns’ defense managed to hold firm and prevent further damage.
